A New Chapter for Aged Care in Australia
On 1 November 2025, a significant milestone was reached with the commencement of the new Aged Care Act, marking one of the most important reforms in the history of Australia’s aged care system.
This new legislation represents a shift towards a more rights-based, person-centred approach to aged care, reinforcing the expectation that older people are treated with dignity, respect and compassion, and that their voices are central to decisions about their care.
What the New Act Means
The new Aged Care Act strengthens accountability and transparency across the sector and places older people firmly at the centre of care and services. Key features include:
- A stronger focus on the rights of older people, supported by a Statement of Rights
- Clear expectations for safe, high-quality and culturally appropriate care
- Enhanced governance, clinical oversight and provider accountability
- Greater emphasis on listening to older people, families and representatives
- Alignment with the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards.
Together, these reforms aim to build trust and confidence in aged care and ensure services are responsive to the needs, preferences and life experiences of each individual.
Our Commitment
We welcome the introduction of the new Aged Care Act and strongly support its intent. The principles underpinning the legislation align closely with our values and the way we deliver care every day.
In preparation for 1 November 2025, we actively reviewed and strengthening our governance frameworks, policies, systems and practices to ensure they exceed the new legislative and quality requirements. This includes continued focus on:
- Person-centred and relationship-based care
- Strong clinical governance and risk management
- Open communication and meaningful engagement with residents and families
- Ongoing staff education, capability and leadership development.
What This Means for Residents and Families
For residents and their families, the new Act reinforces what you should expect from aged care: care that is safe, respectful, transparent and responsive. It strengthens the voice of older people and ensures their rights are clearly articulated and upheld.
We remain committed to working in partnership with residents, families and representatives to support choice, independence and wellbeing.
Looking Forward
The commencement of the new Aged Care Act is more than a legislative change – it is a statement about the kind of aged care system Australia aspires to have. We are proud to be part of this next chapter and look forward to continuing to provide care that supports older people to live with dignity, purpose and quality of life.
