International Nurses Day (IND) is celebrated around the world every May 12, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. This year’s theme is “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies.”
According to research published by the International Council of Nurses (ICN), nurses are not only essential to health care delivery but also serve as key drivers of economic growth. Research shows that a 1% increase in nurse density correlates with a 0.02% increase in life expectancy. Each additional year of life expectancy contributes significantly to national economic prosperity, with a corresponding 2.4% increase in economic growth (Liu & Eggleston, 2022; Ridhwan et al., 2022).
According to the ICN, countries that prioritise universal health coverage and invest in a well-supported nursing workforce see higher life expectancies and healthier populations, which directly enhance the economic productivity of their societies.
At Leigh Place, IND is a time to acknowledge the dedication, skill, and compassion of nurses, especially those in aged care, who play a crucial role in providing care for the elderly. Our Nurses provide essential care and support to residents, contributing significantly to their well-being and quality of life.
Leigh Place understands the importance of nurses’ health and well-being, recognising that a health nursing workforce is vital for a healthy aged care system. We acknowledge the compassion and commitment of our nurses who provide exceptional care for every resident, every day.
Celebrating on 12 May, honours the legacy of Florence Nightingale, who is widely recognised as the founder of modern nursing. Her work during the Crimean War revolutionised patient care and sanitation. The choice of this day as International Nurses Day underscores her enduring influence on the nursing profession.
