Embracing the Future: AI Companions – Technological Innovation in Aged Care

The aged care sector in Australia is undergoing a transformational shift, one driven by new regulatory standards, technological breakthroughs, and a focus on person-centred care.

At Leigh Place, we are proud to lead the way by integrating technology that enhances the quality of life for our residents, aligns with the new Aged Care Act 2024, and Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards, and supports the national Aged Care Technology Roadmap.

AI-powered companions are increasingly being used to support residents’ emotional well-being and daily routines across the aged care sector.

One such advancement is ‘Viv,’ an AI-driven companion developed by researchers at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Viv is designed to engage in meaningful conversations, providing consistent companionship and emotional support to residents.

Leigh Place has been actively involved in trailing Viv, assessing her ability to interact empathetically with our residents. The AI companion listens, shares experiences, and offers patient, always-available interaction, which is particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing feelings of isolation. This initiative aligns with our commitment to person-centred care, as outlined in Standard 1: The Person, by respecting individuality and improving each resident’s emotional connection and comfort.

Innovation Aligned with the new Legislative Framework

The new Aged Care Act 2024 (effective 1 July 2025) encourages providers to integrate digital solutions that facilitate person-centred care, improve communication, and enhance operational efficiency. These include electronic health records, telehealth services, remote monitoring devices, and digital care planning tools.

By embedding these technologies into everyday practice, aged care providers can ensure care is more timely, coordinated, and tailored to individual needs.

Enhancing Person-Centred Care Through Technology

Digital enhancements allow care teams to access real-time health data, personalise care plans efficiently, and communicate effectively with residents and their families. This supports greater transparency and engagement, empowering residents to be active participants in their care decisions.

Technologies such as AI-powered companions, smart home devices, and remote monitoring tools also improve safety and wellbeing while fostering independence and social connection.

Meeting Regulatory Requirements and Driving Continuous Improvement

The Aged Care Act 2024 introduces strengthened quality standards that place greater responsibility on providers to demonstrate compliance and continuous improvement. Digital tools provide reliable data collection and reporting capabilities, making it easier to meet these regulatory obligations and maintain high standards of care.

Leigh Place’s Commitment to Innovation

At Leigh Place, we are actively investing in digital solutions that align with the new legislation and the broader Aged Care Technology Roadmap. Our goal is to combine the best of technology with compassionate care, ensuring that every resident benefits from safe, effective, and personalised support.
